FAQs
How should I format my manuscript for editing?
The working file should be set as Word doc file. The program is most commonly used among editors, and it makes it easier to leave edits and queries for the clients to review and respond to. I also recommend taking out any fancy formatting flourishes that might make it harder for the editor to navigate through your manuscript. Make sure your manuscript has page numbers and correct chapter headings in the navigation panel. Lastly, update the manuscript to be in Times New Roman font, size 12 font, and double spaced, all of which can be changed back to AU or House style at the end.
How long does editing usually take?
The time it takes to edit a manuscript depends on the word count and the level of editing it needs. An editor determines the level of editing a manuscript needs by doing a sample edit (usually five pages from the middle of the manuscript). For a general idea, a manuscript of 50k words will roughly take a bout 2-3 weeks for a light edit and 3-4 weeks if it requires a heavy edit.
What is the difference between manuscript evaluation and beta reading?
Manuscript evaluation focuses on analyzing the manuscript for story structure, character development and arc, plot holes, etc. It is a more thorough critique of the manuscript and done by a professional editor well versed in the craft and genre.
Beta reading provides insight on the target audience’s response and perspective. They are given an early draft of the work and provide general feedback on the story’s plot, flow, and character development. Keep in mind that beta readers are not professional readers or editors. That doesn’t mean, however, that they aren’t a valuable asset to you, the author. By utilizing beta readers, you can gauge the impact your work would have on your target audience and see what you need to change or fix. I’d like to add that although general feedback can be beneficial, there is such a thing as “bad” feedback. What I mean by that is that the feedback can be irrelevant or unhelpful if your work and their background and experiences do not align. I’m not telling you to avoid every feedback you don’t agree with. Rather, it is good to develop a sense for feedback that aren’t helpful so that you don’t get pulled in all different directions trying to appease every single one and end up wasting more time “fixing”your manuscript.
Will you edit fan fictions?
Although I enjoy the occasional fan fictions of my current favorite IP, I primarily focus on refining manuscripts with the intention of getting it polished and ready for the publishing world. What I would recommend for fan fiction is to find beta readers (target audience) and alpha readers (friends and family) who are excited about that franchise and genre.
What is a query letter?
A query letter is a one-page letter usually consisting of 200-300 words addressed to literary agent. The purpose of writing one is to get the agent interested in your work and to request more material of your manuscript. It’s one path (the traditional path) to getting your book published!
